Slinger/Signaller

One of the most important jobs on a building site is that of a slinger/signaller. It requires skill, diligence, and excellent concentration. Slinger/signallers work alongside the lifting teams in order to provide safe direction and supervision to the crane operators.

A slinger/signaller will act as the eyes and ears of the crane operator who is likely to have an obstructed view. When the view is obstructed, the risks involved with loading increase. This is where slingers/signallers come in – they ensure the safety of the operators and everyone else at the site.

What do Slingers/Signallers do?

There are a specialist series of hand signals that will assist the crane operator with the manoeuvres that they will need to take. These have been designed to be easy to make and understand, which you can be assured of with ACTA Crane.

There are situations where the established hand signals won’t be sufficient to maintain a safe working environment. In these cases, additional signals will need to be agreed between the signaller and the crane operator.

In adverse weather – fog, heavy rainfall, poor lighting, etc. – obstructed views will be even more apparent. Hi-vis clothing, along with reflective armbands and signalling bats, will be utilised by our team to ensure a clear view of the signals.

There are extreme cases where the slinger/signaller has the authority to suspend the operation until they feel that it’s safe to resume. We will let you know in advance if this is deemed to be the most appropriate course of action.

As well as holding all the relevant qualifications, Nathan is CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) certified. During this scheme, he trained to become a slinger signaller, crane supervisor and appointed person. He also took his Lorry Loader crane test through the CPCS.
